The Ministry of House Affairs Thursday transferred the Kerala gold smuggling case to the Nationwide Investigative Company (NIA), citing “severe implications for nationwide safety”.
The case pertains to the seizure of 30 kilogram of smuggled gold from a diplomatic cargo addressed to the UAE Consulate-Normal Workplace in Thiruvananthapuram final week.
Transferring the investigation into the case to the NIA, the House Ministry mentioned, “the organised smuggling operation might have severe implications for nationwide safety.”

The choice comes a day after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding “an efficient and coordinated investigation into the incident by all central companies”. He wrote, “The scope of the probe ought to cowl all facets from the supply to the top of utilisation. Each hyperlink of this crime must be unravelled in order that such incidents don’t happen.”
Earlier, M Sivasankar was eliminated because the principal secretary to Kerala Chief Minister, after the senior IAS official was discovered within the shut community of an alleged key participant of the smuggling racket, Swapna Suresh, who had earlier labored as govt secretary on the UAE Consulate-Normal’s workplace.
